Laura and Josh' Singin' in the Rain

by 8/23/2010 2:57 PM

It was a drizzling March day but in so many ways, it was simply the perfect day for Laura and Josh. The rain actually provides awesome, dramatic backdrop perfect for photos! Faith West Photography took amazing shots of this fun and loving couple! We are simply blessed to be a part of this wonderful celebration. Ain't no rain stoppin' us! ^_^

By the way, Laura and Josh had one of the coolest engagement story ever! If you have a moment, check out their engagement story as featured in The New York Times online! Planning the floral was great because they were so organized! So the conference calls and emails worked out very well! They are also very kind, flexible and open to my ideas. I truly appreciate it! ^_^ Oh...here's an interesting fact...Laura was introduced to me by one of my past clients, Joy Cannon (now friend and neighbor and assistant... HAHA! ^_^). The craziest thing is...the two of them have never met themselves! LOL! ^_^ Well, hopefully, Joy gets to meet Laura in person one day! ^_^ Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity! ^_^

For Laura's bridal bouquet, we combined "Black Baccara" roses ("Black Magic" roses make great substitute), red mokara orchids, yellow oncidium orchids, orange freesia and "Mango" mini callas. The combination was perfectly rich in colors and fit for the venue: the wondeful Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn's Landing.

I am excited to get this pretty shot of Josh's boutonniere! He told me that he doesn't want anything too big and he was so happy when he saw this red mokara orchids and seeded eucalyptus combo. YAY! ^_^

For her bridesmaids, we did simple bouquets of yellow mini calla lilies and burnt orange alstroemerias. These matched really well against their burgundy/wine colored dresses.

There were 2 different designs of centerpieces that we did for Laura and Josh. One of the designs was burgundy James Storii Orchids sitting inside a tall, clear, rectangular glass vases (I think this was about 17" tall). The other was short floral arrangement in burgundy, orange color combination sitting in a clear, square glass vase filled with a mix of red, orange and clear marbles. The short centerpiece consisted of burgundy gerbera daisies, burgundy spray roses, burnt orange alstroemerias and fillers.

Because the ceremony was held in the same room as the reception, we were able to easily repurpose the tall centerpieces to line up the aisle. And when we reset the room, we moved those on to the tables. Voila! ^_^

Do It Yourself-Bridal Flowers Workshops Are Back at MALT!

by 8/9/2010 8:01 PM

Hi everybody!

I am excited to let you know that I will be back teaching the Do It Yourself Bridal Flowers Workshops through Mt. Airy Learning Tree this Fall! ^_^

The format is enhanced by making this a make-and-take workshop.

I feel that it's more beneficial for the participants if they get to do the project(s) hands on vs. demo. That's why there's that material fee, but it will be very much worth it. ^_^

Here's the full information of the course:

Join us for an afternoon full of fun and flowers! Learn to make your own hand tied bouquet, stunning boutonniere and wristlet corsages, and even find creative ways to make budget friendly centerpieces! This workshop focuses on personal flowers: bouquet, boutonniere and corsage. Students will take home their flower arrangements.

$55 materials fee payable to instructor.

There are still openings in both sessions remaining at this time.

"Dear Tanti,
Thank you very much for all your help teaching me the techniques i will need to DIY my bridal flowers!  I'm very excited to make the rose bouquets you demonstrated for us and I hope they will turn out as beautiful as yours looked last Saturday!  Thank you for all the tips on rose care and I won't have a fridge to use (except for the boutonnieres) so I will make and store the bouquets in the cool basement (I'm wondering now if I should put a dehumidifier down there b/c you mentioned below that the flowers won't like humidity?) on the night before my wedding.  I've already been practicing the 'french knot' ribbon technique on my umbrella and I'm hoping that with more practice it will work out alright for the big day.  You were such a wonderful teacher and I've told my friend about your upcoming class which will compete in the flower show and she is very much interested in signing up!  I'll spread the work and try to write Mt Airy Learning Tree this week to let them know what a Gem you are and there is definitely interest in your potential floral design class.  I hope to send you some flower pics after my wedding and I look forward to learning from you in the future.
Thank you!"

"Hi Tanti,

I just wanted to express my thanks for facilitating such a great class on Saturday.  I feel like I learned a great deal about the various wedding floral arrangements we reviewed.  You even changed my feelings about corsages as typically I feel they often look old fashioned but I love your version!  I will definitely be looking into the sources you referenced and practicing the techniques you demonstrated.

Lastly, thank you for the follow-up email with the additional information and your offer to answer questions; I will definitely be in touch either with pictures or questions as I work through wedding plans and start to make some decisions (my wedding is October 9th).

Congratulations on your first class as it was a fantastic success!"

"City of Lights" and Hanging Mini Gerbera Daisies DIY Projects

by 7/27/2010 7:34 AM

As I promised, I will share with you how to make these fun centerpieces yourself. ^_^
They are definitely not difficult and fun to make!

"City of Lights"

This recipe has been adjusted for a typical 60" diam. round table.
What that means is instead of having 12-15 vases, this recipe has only 6 vases total.

Photobucket  Photobucket Photobucket

Fresh Ingredients - PER 1 (ONE) TABLE:

4-5 stems Roses (for this recipe, I'll stick to "Black Magic" roses (burgundy/deep red color))
--- break heads for petals

1 (one) piece of Citrus (for this piece, I'll use the same fruit: orange; but you can use limes or lemons)
--- quartered, thinly sliced

3 (three) stems Large Headed Flowers
(I'll stick with Large Gerbera Daisies for this recipe, but other big headed flowers would work, i.e. Hydrangeas, few variety of Dahlias)

2 (two) stems Large Calla Lilies

Other Ingredients - PER 1 (ONE) TABLE:

Cellophane (the kind used for gift basket wrapping)
--- To create the "cracked ice" effect

2 (two) Large Floating Candles (3" diameter; Ivory/White/Other Color is up to you)

1 (one) 4" x 4" x 18"h clear, glass rectangular vase
--- This is to hold the large calla lilies

1 (one) 4" x 4" x 12"h clear, glass rectangular vase
--- This is for the rose petals + cracked ice combo

1 (one) 4" x 4" x 7"h clear, glass rectangular vase
--- This is for
the fruit slices + cracked ice combo

3 (three) 3" x 3" x 3" clear, glass, cube vases
--- This is to hold the big headed flowers

3 (three) tealight candles + holders (or you can use votive candles, too)

How to put these together:

1. Large callas in Large vase:
- Cut one of the callas so the head will sit snugly inside the vase (SAVE the cut off stem from this calla!)
- Cut the other one longer, so it will stick out of the vase
- Place the cut off stem that you set aside from the first calla and put that into the vase between the two callas

2. Rose Petals and Cracked Ice Effect in Medium vase:
- Cut cellophane randomly. I usually just roll them out about 4"-5" wide and just cut straight up following the length of the roll
(The key is NOT to cut the cellophane too big - it'll make the "ice" look fake because it's so crumpled inside
)
- Start with rose petals on the bottom layer and alternate with the crumpled cellophane. Do this until you have crumpled cellophane as your last layer and you can't go any further

- Fill the whole vase with water (LEAVE a good 1"-1.5" space from the top rim of the vase)
- Top the piece with a floating candle (The flame of the floating candle MUST be contained inside the vase for safety purposes)

3. Fruit Slices and Cracked Ice Effect in Small vase:
- Same method as # 2 above

4. Flowers in the Tiny vase:
- Cut the stem of the flower short enough so they'll sit nicely in the tiny vase. Don't forget to fill the vases with water. ^_^

5. Assembling all the above on the table:
- We are going to put all of these on the center of the round table
- Put all 3 tallest vases in the center together (the callas, the two cracked ice effects)
- Place the tiny vases (with the big headed flowers) and tealights around the center
- Try placing them quite close together so it looks like a "city"

** It is optional for you to do the "bed of roses" around the "city". You just have to double the quantity of the roses so you'll have enough to do the spread.

"Hanging Mini Gerbera Daisies"

This is even easier than doing "City of Lights"!
Also, I think this is quite perfect for baby shower, bridal shower or even a birthday party!

Photobucket

Fresh Ingredients:

7 (seven) stems Mini Gerbera Daisies (or you can use any small flowers similar to it like Daisies or Pom-Poms

Other Ingredients:

7 (seven) Water Tubes for Flowers

Thin wire (you can use colored wires, that would be fun; I used jewelry wires)

--- This is to attached the water tubes onto the frame

Mulberry Paper
--- this is to "hide" the water tubes

Wire Picture Frame (doesn't have to be this exact style, but this recipe is designed for this particular base)
--- this is our base
(I so happened got this from Pier1 when it was on sale! ^_^)

How to put these together:

1. Cover the water tubes with mulberry paper by simply wrapping the paper around it. You can use double tape to secure.
Make sure that you leave the top part unwrapped - we still have to put the flowers in. Hehehehe... ^_^
AND don't fill any of these tubes with water yet.

2. Place the wrapped water tubes on the base and secure them with the thin wire.
I placed the water tubes quite randomly. Remember...your water tube placement means that's where your flowers are going to be.
So make sure that they are not too close together.

3. Fill the tube with water - since the tube has such small opening, you need to use a turkey baster or something like that to put the water in.
That's what I did. Hehehehe... ^_^

4. Cut the gerbera stems short enough so it'll snug in just right in the tubes. Place the gerberas in all the tubes.

*******************

Aren't they fun to make or what?! ^____^
Hope you enjoy these projects and if you have any questions, please leave a comment! ^_^

Happy Planning and Happy DIY-ing! ^___^
